Build
Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL
by Kevin Yank
Paperback, SitePoint Pty Ltd; (March 3, 2003)
I was first introduced to this book on SitePoint.com
(an excellent website for web developers) when I downloaded the first
four chapters. They were EXCELLENT and got me hooked on working with
PHP and MySQL. Purchase of the book gives you access to the code in
the book (off the website) that is used for each tutorial. This is
certainly one of the easiest to read tech books that I have owned.
A must read if you want to create your own "open source" database
driven site. (David Riecks)

Design of Sites, The: Patterns, Principles, and Processes for Crafting a Customer-Centered Web Experience by Douglas K. van Duyne, James Landay, Jason I. Hong Paperback, Addison Wesley Professional, July 2002
Creating a Web site is easy. Creating a well-crafted Web site that provides a winning experience for your audience and enhances your profitability is another matter. It takes careful thought to build a site that maximizes retention and repeat visits.
The premise of this book is that there are recurring patterns in the way humans construct things, whether it is a home or a Web site. If designers can identify and understand those patterns, they can use that knowledge to build better things. This book attempts to distill the principles and best practices that make sites enjoyable to visit and an asset to the organizations they serve, giving you the tools you need to create a satisfying and effective Web site.

PHP
Cookbook by David Sklar, Adam Trachtenberg
Paperback, O'Reilly & Associates; (November 2002)
PHP is a simple yet powerful open source scripting language that has
become a big player in dynamic web development. The PHP Cookbook is
not a beginner's guide to PHP, but rather, a book of answers to common
programming problems focusing on solutions to situations you will
encounter most frequently. Contained within the 250 recipes in the
book, there's a worked-out solution of short, focused pieces of code
that can be inserted directly into your applications. But in addition
to the how, you also get explanations of why the code works, so you
can see how to adapt each problem-solving technique to other situations.
This approach makes a book such as this a very valuable resource for
your library.

This all star line-up of writer has put together a book that is one

an aspect often overlooked when discussing usability. The included
case studies are excellent examples of how to develop a web project
into a full-fledged website in a short period of time. A book that
should be on every project managers, or website designers reading
